First Year Kinesiology Courses? (BSc)
Next year I will be entering first year for kinesiology. I plan on earning the BSc degree. I’m wondering what electives I need to obtain my BSc. I thought it was 1 math credit and 2 other credits from the faculty of science. Is this still true? Or is it changing next year? If it is changing what do I have to do to earn my BSc?

So my first year could potential look like this
KIN 1A03
KIN 1AA3
KIN 1C03
KIN 1E03
KIN 1F03
KIN 1G03
MATH 1LS3 (Can I take this math course to fulfill my BSc requirements?)
Science elective (Im thinking of taking BIO 1A03)
Science elective (Im thinking of taking PSYCH 1A03)
STATS 1CC3
That would fulfill all of my BSc requirements by the end of first year right? Is there a certain mark I need to keep up in order to fulfull my BSc? Also is there any other courses I would need to take after first year?

First years start picking their courses in July, usually around the first week.
I would activate your Mac ID as soon as you can, although I don't know when that will technically be.

okay this may be an extremely dumb question, but do we have to take an english/writing course? because all the universities in nova scotia require you to take a writing course first year as far as im aware, but im either stunned or havent seen that mentioned anywhere aha
thanks!

hi jade177. psych coursese can fall under science courses as well as social sciences. I've emailed about what courses distinguish from either one before last year. hope this helps.
Here was the reply i got from the email from the psych department.
"All Psych courses can be used as either Science or Social Science courses. However, there are a few that are considered more social sciences than others and these are the ones that students will usually list as social sciences on graduate applications:
Psych 2AA3, Developmental; Psych 2B03, Personality; Psych 2C03, Social
Psychology; Psych 3Z03 & 3ZZ3 Assessment/Treatment Issues for People
with Developmental Disabilities."
as far as your situtation goes, then yes psych courses are considered science courses. aside from those, i guess there is also: bio, chem, physics, math, geo/earthsciences, computer/software, biochem..

jade, it depends on what is considered a science elective by your faculty.
woodlawngirl, one english course used to be a requirement for kin. however, kin is now part of science and not soc sci, so that may have changed.
my advice to both of you is to consult with the undergrad calendar.

Yes, this looks like an acceptable courseload.
Word to the wise however, (I just finished up my third year of Kin) you should definitely invest in a full blown Math 1A03. They practically spoonfeed you through it. It's organized (usually) by a guy named Dr. Lovric, who is committed to his students' success.
But besides that, (I'm also doing a 'second major' in math (if they give it to me))I'm pretty sure Math 1LS3 is a 'watered down' Math 1A03, which could pass for a substitute only if you excelled at 1LS3. The skills learned in 1A are fundamental (integration, differentiation) and show up everywhere in your university career. I know some people who didn't take math and struggled a bit in Kin 2A03 (Biomechanics 1) because they memorized the formulas. However, the basic concept of integration/differentiation will help you derive the formulas yourself, which leads to an improved understanding.
The point is...you take a course that's a little tougher now, and wind up reaping the benefits in the years to come. And who knows? Maybe you'll decide to take more math courses to fulfill your science requirement (that's what happened to me). Besides, there's a whole slew of tutors for introductory level Math (myself included) who are a valuable resource.
The only reason I would see against taking 1A, and going for 1LS is if you hate math with a passion...and if that is you, disregard this post. Otherwise, yeah, I definitely recommend Math 1A.
Good luck in first year;
-Mike

I just finished my first year of Kin and my schedule was exactly like that except I had an English swapped for the Psych (no reason for that english.) I'm taking Chem this year for my second science.
You have several differences though. You need 12 units of Science as opposed to 6 (sorry to bring bad news.) Also, Stats 1CC3 is being discontinued (click on the course at the link I gave you.)
My advice for you is to take both biology courses first year; I wish I had and I only need 6 science courses. Lots of kin students do this, probably moreso this year as you will need 12 units. You can get the other two units at some point over the next 3 years. Also, Stats 1CC3 was very helpful and will continue to be helpful as I get further in Kin, so, if you enjoy the stats part of KIN 1G03 when you learn it, you would like (and do well in) the second year stats course that is replacing 1CC3. This second year course also fulfills the stats requirement for the B. Sc. Kin, I just don't think they've updated the site that I linked. I believe this course is STATS 2B03 but I'm not sure.
Hope I've been helpful. I know I was confused at this point last year.

I have copied the section from the UG Calendar which offers the course description for Mat 1LS3. You will notice that you require either MCV4U (the new calculus & Vectors course) or MCB4U (the old Advanced Functions and Intro to Calculus course) as a prequisite in order to take Math 1LS3. If you do not have one of these courses, then you need to take Math 1F03 first. Hope this helps.
You should also go to the following page for help and academic counselling sessions
http://www.science.mcmaster. ca/~as...n/newstudents/
Topics from differential and integral calculus, differential equations, discrete math, chosen for their relevance to the life sciences.
Three lectures, one tutorial; one term Prerequisite: One of Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors U, Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus U or MATH 1F03 Not open to students with credit or registration in ISCI 1A24 or to students with a grade of at least 10 in MATH 1A03, 1M03, 1N03, 1X03, 1Z04. Students with a grade of at least 10 in MATH 1LS3 may use it as a substitute for MATH 1A03 for prerequisites and for consideration to a Level II program for which MATH 1A03 is normally required.
Completion of one of <A href="http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calendar/year2008/crs_1655.htm">MATH 1A03, 1B03, 1D03 (last offered 2007-2008), 1LS3 (first offered 2008-2009) is a requirement for this program
