First Year - make up courses
Hi im going into first year and hoping to get into the BA psychology, Neuroscience & Behavior in second year
The basic courses i need to take are
Psych: 1X03, 1XX03
Bio: 1A03, 1M03
Math: 1A03, 1LS3, 1M03
The thing is i have never taken any of the biology and math courses in my high school years. Which means i need to take...
1P03 - Intro to Biology & 1K03 - Intro to Calc for social science.
My question is.. Is is mandatory for me to take those 2 make up courses to advance to level 2?

Yes, if you don't have Grade 12 U Biology, you cannot take Bio 1A03 until you take Bio 1P03.
Same deal with Math, you can't take 1A03 until you take 1K03.
Therefore, if you want to get into the BA Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour, you need to take the courses you listed. But to take those you need to take Bio 1P03 and Math 1K03.

ok! thanks. this leads to my second question. Now that i need to take those 2 extra courses, this means that i have a total of 27 units of mandatory studies. which leaves me 3 units of elective study.
I want to take the linguistics course, Japanese 1Z06 as an elective during my first year. Am i allowed to take an extra 3 units during the first year? because if i decide to take 1Z06 along with my mandatory courses, ill have a total of 33 units of study during that my first year, is that allowed?

You won't be able to. I'm not sure if you can even overload in first year. The requirement is a 7.0GPA, but you haven't been at McMaster before. But still, contact your academic adviser ASAP to ask if you can overload. Otherwise you'll have to select another elective or take a course during summer school to make up for the 3 credits.

I don't think it would be a good idea to overload =(. You're already going into a new setting and such, adjusting will be hard enough. I thought about it as well,, but decided it's best to stay away from it. That's just my opinion though =)

You can't take Japanese 1Z06 and 2Z03 at the same time, but you could take Japanese 1Z06 during the summer 2010, and go straight to 2Z03 in second year.
I want to understand though, is this what you had in mind?
Term 1:
Biology 1P03
Math 1K03
Psych 1X03
Linguistics 1A03
Japanese 1Z06
= 15 units
Term 2:
Biology 1A03
Biology 1M03
Psych 1XX3
Math 1A03
Math 1SL3
Math 1M03
Japanese 1Z06
= 21 units - yikes.

Uh Not sure if you can take Math 1LS3 AND Math 1A03. If you get a 10 or higher in Math 1LS3, it counts as Math 1A03.

Haha okay, he had them both listed and I was like whooaa.
So it's actually...
Term 1:
Biology 1P03
Math 1K03
Psych 1X03
Linguistics 1A03
Japanese 1Z06
= 15 units
Term 2:
Biology 1A03
Biology 1M03
Psych 1XX3
Math 1SL3
Math 1M03
Japanese 1Z06
= 18 units - yikes ... not so bad.
Not taking Japanese would probably be the best option buuut it's upto you. :]

Yep, I was right. You can't take Math 1LS3 if you are registered in Math 1A03 or Math 1M03:
"Not open to students with credit or registration in ISCI 1A24, MATH 1A03, 1M03, 1N03, 1X03, 1Z04"
Also, you can't take Math 1M03 if you are taking Math 1A03:
"Students considering upper year mathematics courses should take MATH 1A03. Not open to students with credit or registration in ARTS&SCI 1D06, ISCI 1A24, MATH 1A03, 1LS3, 1N03, 1X03, 1Z04. "

Okay looking at PNB in the undergraduate calendar, it makes sense haha.
Quote:
Cumulative Average of at least 6.0; a grade of at least B- in each of PSYCH 1X03 (or 1AA3) and 1XX3 (or 1A03); credit in one of BIOLOGY 1A03, 1M03 (or 1AA3), 1P03 (or 1K03) or Grade 12 Biology U; and credit in MATH 1A03, 1LS3 or a grade of at least C- in MATH 1M03.
|
I don't think overloading is needed at all actually. It's worded to sound like he could take one of out of three courses listed for Biology and Math. So... yeah, I think you'll be fine! It's just a wee bit confusing.

ok i guess ill take japanese durring summer school then..
If i take all my prerequisite courses my time table would probably look like this..
Term1
1X03 - Intro to Psycho
1P03 - Intro to Biology
1K03 - Intro to Calculus for Social Science
Elective03 - An un-chosen elective
--------------
12 units
Term 2
1XX3 - Foundations of Psychology
1A03 - Biology, Cellular & Molecular
1M03 - Biodiversity, Evolution & Ecology
1A03 - Calculus I
1LS3 - Math for Life Science
1M03 - Calculus for Social Sciences
---------------
18 Units
Im wondering if i can take one of the courses in my term 2 and place it in my first unit of study? Im wondering if im allowed to take any of my 2nd term courses in my first year, as most of my first year courses are prerequisites for my second years.
