MSU Update: Back into the Swing of Things
From MSU Blog
It has been a week since Welcome Week ended and things are beginning to return to normal here at the MSU. That means I have returned to wearing pants instead of my Maroons suit and the urge to turn everything into a cheer is abating (trying cheering ‘education policy’ and watch people flee). Given that September is almost over my focus is turning towards the upcoming Municipal Elections and informing students about how ridiculously important it is that they vote (more about that in a later blog).
I am writing this blog to let everyone know about some important things that have happened and are coming up in the MSU. First, the Board of Director’s office hours have begun. They will occur from 2:00-4:00pm every Tuesday. At least one or two members of the board will be in the office to answer your questions or chat about the MSU. Next week will see the MSU Teaching Awards presented for the 2009-2010 year. They will take place in the Council Chambers (GH 111) on Thursday, September 23rd from 4:00-6:00pm. It would be great to have a strong student turnout to support the professors that care most about those they teach. Also, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) will be visit McMaster on Thursday, September 23rd. They will be holding meetings with the university administration and local media, as well as holding an information table in the student centre.
Finally, on Friday, September 17th the MSU President Mary Koziol, External Affairs Commissioner Huzaifa Saeed and I attending the Hamilton Post Secondary Advisory Group. This groups meets about three times a year and is hosted MPP’s Ted McMeekin and Sophia Aggelonitis and is attended by McMaster, Mohawk College and Redeemer University-College. It was a very successful meeting in getting out points across to the MPPs and we hope to building off this success for the next gathering, which will be attended by the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, John Milloy.
This is just a short update, and my regular, massive end of month update will be out in two weeks! I hope to see all of you at Homecoming next weekend where I will be presenting Laurier’s student union president with a beautiful Marauders jersey!
As always, any questions, comments and concerns can be emailed to me at [email protected].

Hi- I was wondering if SOCS students or part-time students are allowed to vote for the MSU?

All full-time undergrads are MSU members, and thus can vote in elections and be members of various clubs and work at the various services.
Part-time undergrads are part of MAPS, and cannot vote in elections or work in MSU services, but are free to use them.
Grad students (both full and part time) are part of the GSA (GSU? Whichever its called)

Just to further clarify, MAPS students can buy-in to being a part of the MSU through the MAPS-MSU Transferability Agreement. Basically, a part-time student can pay the MSU fees to access all of our services, etc and that would enable them to vote in our elections as well.
