You do NOT have to live in res first year. If you want to, the option is available. But it is in no way a requirement.

An apartment near res isn't that much cheaper than res (assuming you have a 12 month lease), you should look around for a room in a house near res, sometimes landlords will even lower prices if they have an empty room and they really want to fill it.

Yes, it is! The evil Patrick Deane, in cahoots with the maniacal Peter George and the sinister William McMaster, has contrived this most abominable plot in which students must use communal washrooms and, even more ghastly, must make friends with complete strangers! Despair, ye mortal! The apocalypse is nigh!

From what I know, getting a room in one of the houses will be cheaper than most apartments, and it'll be pretty close to campus too.

On the application you have the option of requesting to be roomed with someone in the same program as you.

hi,

you do not have to live in a student house in your 1st year. I lived in a student house in my 1st year. Its really nice and much cheaper than res. I am looking for roommates in my student house. let me know if you are interested.

1 BR 2 people = 1 bedroom shared between two people in an apartment-style residence, so you get the kitchen, living room, and a washroom between the two of you as well. This would definitely only be found in Bates. Unfortunately, I don't really know how they're like (never lived in one myself nor heard of others' experiences), but it seems like it'd be very similar to living in a double.

Yep very true, hence why it's just a request

I kind of wished I did get paired up with someone in my program though. But then again, residence is so awesome that I got to work with tons of other people.
