suggestion: if you're going to watch stuff off of DC++, watch movies rather than tv shows. At least in the long run you will have only spent 2 hours staring at a computer screen...rather than days.

It doesn't feel like time is going by when you start watching those 20 minute episodes of your favourite show, until you look up and realize you've just watched 12 episodes and you have a midterm the next day. :S

Now that im off campus how can I use DC++? Does it work through MacConnect on campus? Or do I need to find a place to plug myself into the wall? Or hook up with a friend in res?

I second that questions becasue I am most probably living off-campus for first year!!!

DC++ should still be available online, but it's a lot slower.

DC++ last year really sucked and I think that's an understatement. Not a lot of people contributed and as a result the selection was horrible. Another factor was the fact that they raised the required sharing so high. This diminishes the population of students using DC++ which means that you have to get your files from the source. Not only does this mean that the person has to be on DC++ but it also means you are only downloading from 1 person, maybe 2-3. This means that downloading isn't as fast as it could be.

DC in general last year was a bit of a cluster****. Tough, IIRC, the limits didn't really stop that many people from coming on. We averaged more users than we did 2 years ago, it's just that 80% of the users were straddling the share limit (which is why it kept getting raised). We only had like 3 users who were regulars that had over 1TB of share, 2 years ago we had 6 or 7 and someone had almost 3TB of HD movies/shows. Apparently the year before that was even better with sharing. We just need to find a way to at least encourage people to share what they download if nothing else.

The price of a rental works out to about the same price as buying a fridge, so rentals are almost always a bad idea

Yes, but if you're travelling a long distance in a small car (or taking a plane or public transit), you might not have room to bring a fridge. They have rentals available on campus near the beginning of frosh week, which can be much more convenient.

I didnt use DC++ that much last year while in Rez. I left it on a lot though and it was a good place to chat BUT...I didnt share much on it only about 10gigs worth of trance music and crap. But...this year I'll have about 2TB worth of crap that I'll share. Only thing is that I'll be off campus so...speeds will be slow

you should bring lysol wipes, especially if you're a messy eater and you don't want to walk to the nearest tap whenever you want to clean your hands

DC++ works fine off campus (you do have to forward some ports and change a few settings though). The school's internet upload speed is fast enough to max out your off-campus connection, but it still won't be as fast as the school's LAN.

Also, if you're gonna use it off campus, make sure to not share anything anyone wants. I know this is kind of contradictory to the point of DC++, but household internet upload speeds are crap (meaning your contribution is almost worthless), and it will kill your monthly bandwidth limit.

Also, when torrents are throttled, so is DC++ :(.
