Switching Programs
I'm just wondering who I would talk to about switching from Life Science to Commerce. Would I talk to the science faculty or the commerce? Has anyone done this before? How difficult was it to make the switch?

Also, when we apply to programs for second year do I add this as one of them? Even though I will only have a few of the first year required courses? Or are you only allowed to add science programs?

Talk to the science faculty for how to go about switching and whatnot. Only talk to the commerce faculty if you need to know the requirements and such, but even that the science faculty advisors might be able to help you with it too. You're allowed to add in any program from what I remember. It's just a dropdown menu with all the options from all faculties.

Make sure you meet the requirements listed here. Internal transfers are competitive though.

Just to highlight some main points from the document:

-Since Commerce II is a limited enrolment program, only a select number of spaces have been allocated for internal transfers.
-You will NOT be considered if you do not possess ALL the above-mentioned criteria.
-Students have only ONE opportunity to apply for internal transfer to Commerce II.
-Beginning in March 2011, you will be able to go online and apply for an internal transfer through MUGSI. You will need to indicate the Program Name which is ‘B. Com.’

I don't think I will be able to transfer. I would possess like 3 of the required courses. Can you actually start again in another program? That kind of scares me. I guess I will talk to the science academic advisors ASAP.

You can transfer to Commerce, but it's difficult. My friend is transferring from first year Engineering into Commerce, which is actually harder. Go to the DeGroote School of Business, to the Academics Program Office, and talk to the woman at the desk -- she's very helpful and will book you an appointment.

i transferred into commerce from engineering. i wouldn't say it's harder you just need to know the tranfer requirements ahead of time. i didn't have the requirements so what i did was enroll in a 2nd year program i was eligible for and picked courses that i need to fulfill the requirements to transfer into commerce and i also went ahead and started taking courses required for commerce. This lets you have a lighter course load in future years and you can work towards a minor.

You could try summer school to get those required courses. Not sure if that puts you at a disadvantage though...
