Chemistry 1AA3
Overview
Chemistry 1AA3 is a continuation of Chem 1A03 and discusses organic chemistry, additional bonding topics (orbital hybridization), chemical kinetics, buffer solutions, intermolecular forces, and a new topic,...

Not sure if it's the same, but last year:
Ch. 10, 15, 16, 19, 20.1-20.4 are assumed knowledge or material from 1A03
You cover:
26.1-26.3, 26.5-26.7, 26.11-26.12
11.1-11.4
There was a special unit with selected parts of 26.4 and 26.9
17.1-17.4, 17.6
12.1-12.6
14.1-14.11

I've heard positive reviews about both, more about Valliant though. Check these links out, they reviews will give you a better idea.
Stover: http://www.ratemyprofessors. com/Sh...p?tid=8 23708
Valliant: http://www.ratemyprofessors. com/Sh...p?tid=1 02445

Both are amazing, you're lucky that the choices are both so high.
Stover is hilarious, and makes going to lectures enjoyable. If you'd have difficulty working up the motivation to go to class, he might be a good bet.
Valliant is just a great teacher though, it almost feels like he's forcing the info into you (a good thing). I really liked his style of teaching.

How hard is the material for this course compared to CHEM 1A03 and difficulty in general compared to CHEM 1A03? I found CHEM 1A03 to be easy but it required work to do well like any other university course.

I heard from a few upper years that 1AA3 is easier (with work of course), because it's more organic chemistry, buffers etc and less physical chemistry(which seems to be more of a problem from most people).

Yea, I've heard the same thing. Sounds good. How was Dr. Hatala? I have him next semester, I heard he is really good.

Simply put he's amazing. He's funny, keeps you awake in class, simplifies concepts and is really approachable. You can tell by how his section has been full.. FOREVER. and no one wants to drop it !

Yea, I was lucky to get that section in July. I had Goward for CHEM 1A03 and she was very good. Hatala's podcasts were pretty good.

I know me too! Glad I got it before, instead of trying to do so now. Hopefully I'll see you in class!
We had Goward for like 1-2 lectures. She wasn't as good as Hatala (maybe I was just used to his lecturing style/jokes), but she was definitely close.

Do you guys know if there are iclickers for chemistry?
Man, if there isn't,, I'm there, for Hatala's class!!!

Are you sure it's this term's course outline and not last year's?
Also, I'm pretty sure there are iClicker questions, based on what I was told by upper years. And also, the two courses are the same, just one is a continuation of another.
On the other hand, you can always attend more than one lecture if you attend your own along with it

Just finished another year of chem! Thoughts on the course:
Orgo, Kinetics, and Acid Base made up the entire course pretty much. A bit of IMF and chem bio were also thrown in there.
Orgo: Pretty dry stuff, its mostly reactivity of functional groups and converting from one f.g. to another. Kind of boring, just remember the synthesis chart.
Acid/Base: Mostly buffers and titrations, tons of math in this section, so be ready for algebra. People tend to struggle with this unit a lot, maybe it’s the math, and how the test questions can be “twisted” so that its never the same as the ones in tutorial and such. But really, it’s the same stuff, over and over again. Overall, an okay unit though, put def. put in some effort.
Kinetics: In the beginning, its fine, rate law and such. Then, we get into the enzyme stuff, and the two assumptions. They messed up a lot of people. Tip: Go to office hours! Although I went, I felt the profs didn’t really clear up what I wanted to know. Thankfully, the exam didn’t have any crazy questions about that topic.
Chem Bio: Talked about assays and HVA. Aromaticity, brief unit. Not too hard.
IMF: pretty ok, talked about phase diagrams. Mostly, Qs asked about comparing boiling point and melting points of 2 molecules.
Test 1: The entire thing was orgo! Funnn, not! Lol difficulty was ok, wording was not too great on that test.
Test 2: Culmulative, up to buffers. Class average wasn’t too good, more math involved, due to acid base.
Tutorial: unlike 1A03, the tut. In 1AA3 were optional. I found them to be very helpful, I highly recommend people to go to tutorial! TAs are very helpful too.
Instructors: I had Valliant, at 8:30 in the morning (boohoo). He was great! Very clear! Hatala is great too, except he’s not teaching anymore. Berti and Stover are good too, so any of the profs are decent for Chem.
Exam: 37Qs, 5 3 markers, rest 2 markers. The 2 markers, for the most part were ok, the 3 markers kind of killed people… they were pretty hard, so prepare! Almost half were kinetics questions.
Overall: Pretty good course, I might be biased because im going into chem next year, but it was organized and tests were all reasonably. Mark wise, it’s not the easiest course, but with solid effort, a 12 is definitely within reach.
