I am going to my first year life Sci.

I was wondering if I could get some advice in terms of how to study for midterms, tests, exams, etc.
I've heard from some upper year students that details don't matter as much as they did in high school. But I still don't have a clear idea of how I should be studying.

Any help is appreciated!!

first year is definately not the hardest year, it might seem like it, but it's just moves a lot quicker than highschool classes.

Balance. It's really the biggest thing. While you are here for a degree, and it's important to spend time studying/doing homework, if your friend asks to go for coffee/drinks/etc, say yes. Unless you have a project/midterm the next day, there's no excuse not to take a bit of a break and catch up with friends (and let's be honest, you'd probably end up procrastinating with Facebook anyway.) The four years go by faster than you would not believe, and you'll wish you spent more time with the people you care about if you don't put in any effort now.

I discovered that sometimes the bookstore orders an edition of the book the professor knows nothing about, leading to confusion (I'm looking at you, bio 2b03). So maybe waiting until the dust settles is good for multiple reasons.

My recommendation is if you got a learning disability and can prove it (like ADD/ADHD, aspergers, performance-related anxiety, etc) make sure to make use of disability services.

Most of the time what you are eligible to receive can be extra time on tests/exams (as much as 2x the regular time), you also don't necessarily have to write 2 tests or exams on the same day, you can request to write tests/exams on the computer instead of class, a GREAT support network of academic counsellors, upper year students who mentor you, etc.

Also, you can probably qualify for a $2000 bursary from OSAP...but this is all something that you need to take care of ahead of time.
